Anand Sinha takes charge as RBI deputy governor



Anand Sinha has taken charge as the fourth deputy governor at the Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday. Mr Sinha gets a little over two year term till February 13,2013. He will look after the department of banking operations and development and urban banks department. He will also look after the departments of information technology, expenditure and budgetary control, inspection, legal and premises.

Mr Sinha joined the Reserve Bank of India in 1976 after his Masters in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He has provided significant intellectual inputs for several regulatory and supervisory policies , including the paper on entry norms for new private and foreign banks. Mr Sinha used to earlier look after the department of banking operations and development, among others. He has also handled, among others, foreign exchange, deposit insurance and regional office work during his career.

As executive director, he represented India and the Reserve Bank on several international committees. He was RBI’s alternate representative in the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS), Bank for International Settlements (BIS), Basel, Switzerland .

Mr Sinha, was leading the race for deputy governor’s post created after Usha Thorat retired in November last year along with his colleague VK Sharma was also in the race for the post.
